The group went to visit the site to analysis the area around 50 Hylton Street in terms of the context, the buildings and the atmosphere surrounding the proposed building. The Jewellery quarter was started from the late 18th century to the end of the 19th century and was associated with the industrial revolution which explains the buildings being originated from the Victorian era. The Jewellery Quarter have over 500 jewellery businesses and over 200 listed buildings. The Quarter is also part of Birmingham's Big City plan to make the city a enterprising, innovative and green area. 50 Hylton Street has not been in use for some time now and has a lot of damage, such as overgrowing plants, missing roof. So the building is now an infill site which used to be a housing plot.
For this project I have been given the Butcher as my client. For my client I have to design a living and work space at 50 Hylton Street in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham.
The family living in the building are Frank and Patricia, with their two sons. The clients shop is a family business and they have been involved in the butchery trade for decades. They have chosen 50 Hylton Street to operate their business from. In their store they are selling a range of different cut meats from their own home made sausage and pies, cuts of organic meats all the way through to rolled haunch of venison. Also in the building is workshops where they give advice and teach how to cook and prepare the meats to their customers. |
